What We Do

The Alliance helps steward San Diego County Food Vision 2030, and supports our regional movement to transform our food system. We serve as weavers, community organizers, storytellers, capacity builders, and resource mobilizers. We work to build networks, change policies, shift culture, and increase capacity, in support of a healthier, more sustainable, and more just food system for all.

Build Networks

The Alliance’s work is rooted in relationships. Uprooting and dismantling systems of oppression requires deep, sustained collaboration and trust building, from which collective wisdom can emerge.

The Alliance promotes cross-sector collaboration to create impactful and lasting change in the food system. We lead regional planning and evaluation efforts, weave connections across communities, and cultivate shared spaces for networking, learning, and celebration.

Change Policies

Power in the food system is determined by policies governing land and water use, economic development, labor, public health, infrastructure, transportation, housing, and education. Ideally, policies in all of these areas would help ensure that everyone has access to healthy, culturally appropriate food; protect air, water, and land; support the farmers, fishermen, producers, and workers who put food on our tables; and give all communities the ability to self-determine their food environments. Where these policies fall short, there are opportunities for change.

The Alliance leverages our network to advance policies that cultivate a just food system. We work with partners to organize advocacy efforts, uplift community voices in decision-making spaces, and support successful adoption of equitable policies.

Shift Culture

The movement for transforming our food system is an invitation to rethink our relationship with food. Shifting to a respectful, reciprocal food culture is the only path to building a more equitable, resilient future—one in which our world’s abundance is shared.

The Alliance strives to shift culture by uplifting authentic, original stories; advancing inclusive narratives; producing and distributing equitable media; and creating inspiring, transformative experiences (i.e. events, workshops, and learning opportunities).

Increase Capacity

Transforming our food system is resource-intensive. Essential skills, infrastructure, and funding are all needed to build a strong foundation for social justice and change. Capacity building nourishes and activates organizations and movements.

The Alliance strengthens the capacity of individuals, businesses, and organizations in our network that are working to cultivate justice, fight climate change, and build resilience in our food system. We support them with equitable and culturally responsive technical assistance, resource mobilization, and educational resources.
