Accessing healthy food is a challenge for too many Americans—particularly those living in low-income neighborhoods, communities of color, and rural and tribal areas. In San Diego, nearly half a million are food insecure and majority of these individuals live in neighborhoods without easy access to fresh, affordable, and nutritious food options. Increasing accessibility creates good neighborhood jobs and can be a powerful force of revitalization for disinvested communities.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), CalFresh in California, is a critical tool for providing nutrition to San Diegans. Through the Farm Bill, the current administration is promising deep cuts and structural changes to SNAP that will harm families, seniors, people with disabilities, veterans and Americans struggling with unemployment and underemployment. In 2017, $476 million dollars were issued for CalFresh in San Diego and generated over $737 million for the food economy.
